The Goldman Family Fund was created to honor Ruth Goldman, Ph.D., San Francisco State University psychology professor emerita, by her family and friends. She emigrated from Poland to the United States as the child of a working class family fleeing the Holocaust. Once in school, new hurdles presented themselves until she became fluent in English. She remembers the struggle to acculturate, as well as the life-altering experience of an elementary school teacher reaching out to her and her parents. She was the first in her family to attend college. Throughout her own education at public universities, her hard work and academic achievements were rewarded by loans, scholarships, fellowships and research grants. For over 30 years as a professor of psychology, she taught, supervised and continues to inspire students to make a difference. Students she mentored became mentors, and those they mentored have in turn mentored others. Her life and vision are the touchstones of the New Leader Scholarship. |
